Obviously, Yozo himself is not a good character, he is far away from it. The way Dazai constantly wrote about Oba’s fear of almost everything in his life, his inner turmoil of wanting death more than anything, his hatred and timid personality to others, his unspeakable terror of not suitable as human seems to be a cry for help by the author himself or so I thought from the book. He did it to be liked, to be accepted in the eyes of public, to fit in but he himself lives in constant fear of his surrounding, of him being discovered that he is not fitted to be human. The façade of a clown, an act of deception by the mask of a man truly out of his character was the only thing he held onto as he grows up. My unhappiness stemmed entirely from my own vices and I had no way of fighting anybody”

But those people can fight their unhappiness with society fairly and squarely, and society for its part easily understand and sympathizes with such struggles. I suppose it would be no exaggeration to say that the world is composed entirely of unhappy people. There are all kinds of unhappy people in this world. Oba developed hate to women and degrades them but he still could not reject them. He suffered in the hands of women who takes advantage of him since small and even as he grows up, he is still being taken advantage on. What is it to be human? Do we confer to the traditional customs and society, the working of society as whole instead of individuality, reign free from the shackles that bind our lives. He always felt he is disqualified from being human and cannot relate to what makes up a normal human. The protagonist, Yozo Oba was born in an aristocratic family with knowledge and teaching of Western culture, however from young he seems unable to reconcile with his own identity. This was written as journal entries by the main character, Oba and we see directly his disturbing thoughts and they are vividly painful to read because we are reading from his personal nightmares. For such a short book, the emotional ride i had with this story will stay for a long time with me I tabbed so many quotes and the sentences that resonated with me.
