It was during this time that she met a woman by the name of Fran Kaplan. In 1978, after having just recovered from open heart surgery, she enrolled in college to earn a BA in community education. My grandmother Clara Esther White was born on Oct. 19, 1919. But instead of preaching about the importance of women's reproductive health care and rights, I’d like to share a story about a few women I love, who made a huge difference in the lives of so many. I could talk about the statistics and the contentious politics, the laws and measures that some states have taken to restrict access to women. Hell, we haven’t been able to reach a consensus about it in 50 years. The issue of women's reproductive rights is impossible to sum up in 500 words or less. When I wrote my memoir, Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up, I wrestled with the idea of whether to share the most difficult decision I’ve ever made - to have an abortion. In her book, she writes about having an abortion. For six seasons she played Santana Lopez on the hit show Glee. I felt like I got a little bit more of her and maybe that’s what I loved so much. Overall, I really enjoyed this and I don’t know if I would have felt the same before she passed. Actually, there’s not a ton about Glee in this book, which is actually okay. I also appreciated that she didn’t just make this a huge book about trashing Lea. Her love for her son was so obvious though. Since I’m reading this so late, obviously that wasn’t true since she has divorced him. For example, you can’t really have a perfect marriage and partner. There are some things that she was really naive about. Guys, she’s been through a lot of stuff! She’s so honest and raw in this book and I appreciated that. She grew up in the spotlight and she talks about how she learned a lot of hard lessons early. I learned a lot of things about her that I didn’t know. It’s so hard to rate a memoir because they are so personal. It’s even better when it’s narrated by the author themselves. I listened to it as an audiobook, which I’m finding is my preferred way to read memoirs. With her passing, I decided it was time to read her book.
